"Buy British steel" Louise Haigh urges government as procurement rules come under the microscope
Sheffield MP, Louise Haigh, today pressed the Government to look to use British Steel in all major infrastructure, construction and government-backed projects as the specialist steel maker Sheffield Forgemasters announced plans to shed 100 jobs.
Questioning the Minister on the UK's procurement policy, Louise demanded to know why despite new procurement guidelines issued in October prominent UK steel manufacturers are being left out in the cold on major infrastructure projects.
Commenting, Louise Haigh MP said:
"We need a government banging the drum for British steel, especially in major procurement projects such as the nuclear new build which will require hundreds of thousands of tonnes of steel. We have the capacity in the UK to manufacture up to 70% of the components needed in civil nuclear projects so we need a firm commitment that world leading British companies will compete on a level playing field for major infrastructure projects like these."
"This government has so far been asleep at the wheel as the crisis has rocked UK steel, but now we need cast iron guarantees that they will buy British steel where possible. I join the calls from communities up and down the country to act before it is too late."
