Louise has welcomed the "massive vote of confidence in Sheffield" as a recommended a change in the route to enable HS2 to link into Sheffield City Centre rather than bypass the city altogether as was originally planned.
The report prepared by Sir David Higgins, Chairman of HS2, states that the newly recommended route will see high-speed trains link off the mainline and into Sheffield City Centre.
The new recommendation slash journey times to the capital by 41 minutes taking the journey time to 79 minutes and save £1bn on the initial Meadowhall proposals. This proposal also opens up the possibility of running high-speed trains between Sheffield and Leeds.
Commenting Louise said:
“It is hugely welcome that these new plans bring HS2 to the heart of our city. Sheffield can be at the centre of the Northern revival but only if infrastructure & investment like this is delivered.”
“These proposals are a huge vote of confidence for Sheffield after a fantastic campaign run by people across the City. I will now be pressing the Government to get on and approve the recommendation so we can get on and take this city forward.”
