Statement from Louise Haigh MP on the serious incidents in the Gleadless Valley area this week
As many of you will know there was a second serious incident in the Gleadless Valley area yesterday after police were called to a domestic incident.
Five police officers were involved in the incident and one female police officer has been seriously injured. She is being treated in hospital. All our thoughts are with her and her family. Her bravery is a credit to South Yorkshire Police and the entire community is grateful to all the police officers who responded to this incident.
A male has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is in custody.
Police are appealing for witnesses and if you saw the incident which was on Plowright Close just off Gleadless Road at 19.50 yesterday (Wednesday evening) or a short time later at the Co-op store off Blackstock Road as police made attempts to arrest the man you are advised to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 959.
As you may also be aware, a 22-year-old in women was tragically killed on Tuesday morning just a short distance away from the incident on Wednesday night. A 37-year-old man was arrested and has been charged with murder by South Yorkshire Police.
A heavy police presence was stationed in Gleadless Valley overnight and cordons are still in place at the scene and there will be addition patrols in operation over the coming days. These are both extremely distressing but incredibly rare incidents and South Yorkshire Police would like to reassure the public that in both incidents the suspects have been arrested and are in custody. The public at large is therefore not in danger.
The incident is another reminder of the heroic work our police officers undertake, putting themselves at risk in order to keep us safe. It is also a reminder of the courage of our paramedics who time and again arrive at scenes, uncertain of what they might find, to treat those in need.
If you are concerned or notice any suspicious behaviour in your area, as always please contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 who will assist.
